Cult-TV Theme Watch: Floating Heads

So, what’s the deal with big floating heads? I’m not certain of the answer, but in cult-television history there have been many beings possessed of giant…floating…heads.

In Star Trek (1966 – 1969) the Thasians of “Charlie X” in the first season were depicted as floating green, humanoid heads, for example.

In Space: 1999 (1975 – 1977), the anti-matter alien from Sunim, Vindrus, was also depicted as a floating head the first time he was detected by Shermeen (Lynne Frederick).

In Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987 – 1994), the Enterprise traveled to the center of the universe in the fourth season story “The Nth Degree” and encountered a race of aliens represented by a three-dimensional floating head.

A floating Sleestak head was seen in the Land of the Lost (1974 – 1977) episode “The Possession,” and floating heads (in jars) are a mainstay of Matt Groening’s Futurama.

Finally, floating heads of a different type -- severed zombie heads -- appeared in aquariums in the Governor’s living quarters in The Walking Dead (2010 - ).
