Spaceships: 2000 - 2009

The first decade of the twenty first century brought new spaceship designs, including two new variations of the Starship Enterprise, and a new version of the Battlestar Galactica.

And yet, looking at these ships, I confess not to feel too close to most of the designs (Firefly's Serenity is a big exception...I love that ship.).

By this time -- 2000 - 2009 -- in movie and TV history, CGI is regularly employed to create these ships. Though they appear intricate, I can't say many of them captured my heart like Space:1999's Eagle did, or the way the Millennium Falcon did.

How many do you remember, or recognize?

Agree about the Eagles. Sometimes the simpler designs of earlier shows are more memorable. For example, the clean white "V" shuttles (1984) are just more fun than the ugly grey CGI shuttle of the 2009 version. Though the Star Trek: The Next Generation ships look stunning in high def, the much more dynamic efx scenes in Enterprise are more "cinematic".

  4. Mighty slim pickings here... 10 looks intriguing and despite the pretty much unavoidable fact that it's CGI I like it. Logical hard science fiction type design. I found out what it was but I had to "cheat" with an image matching search so I don't feel worthy of claiming the glory of answering:-)

The new Star Trek and Battlestar ships are kind of like hearing a beloved old song being covered by a modern pop artist using ProTools and lots of Autotune... any points scored through the connection to the past are obliterated by the ugliness of the modernization.

  5. Okay I'll try and fill in a few gaps
    8. Antares (Defying Gravity)
    10. Icarus (Sunshine)
    11. Axiom (Wall E)

There are some interesting design similarities between the Antares and the Icarus both of which are impressive.
