While I am a fan of Spader, he is best, imo, as a villain, however casting MacReady was the saving grace. Any film with Kurt Russell in it, minus Goldie Hawn, gets the benefit of the doubt and 'Stargate' is no different. While I think that 'The Patriot' was Emmerich's best directorial effort, 'Stargate' was fun.Trenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00419980258148279356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-55198855318605581412012-04-30T14:07:44.604-04:002012-04-30T14:07:44.604-04:00"Frankly, I don’t regard the bulk of Emmerich..."Frankly, I don’t regard the bulk of Emmerich’s oeuvre in very positive terms. Despite the bad reviews it received on release, Stargate likely dominates even today as the best Emmerich sci-fi film in the aforementioned pack. In part that’s because the film’s opening act is so engaging, and it builds up a real sense of anticipation, mystery, and excitement."

Well said! I couldn't agree more. STARGATE is definitely Emmerich's finest moment and I still find it baffling what a franchise starter it turned out to be. As you point out, the concept is so intriguing, so ripe with possibilities.

I also love the film's first act. It sucks me in every time. And what a fascinating pairing up of two such disparate acting styles as that of Spader and Russell and yet their off-kilter chemistry works in a weird sort of way.

I will also confess that THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW is something of a guilty pleasure and probably the only other Emmerich film I can stomach.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-20419257975337738242012-04-29T11:54:13.234-04:002012-04-29T11:54:13.234-04:00Hi,
Excellent review, as always.

The city of the damned is incredibly boring or it was for me as an adult, anyway. As a kid, though, it was really great stuff!

The opening credits are also worth mentioning as they are particularly impressive.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06741077654926599386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-45640790996116508562012-04-28T10:02:29.392-04:002012-04-28T10:02:29.392-04:00You know of my long-time affection for this one, J...You know of my long-time affection for this one, John. It's odd little pairing of James Spader and Kurt Russell and a sci-fi imagining does extremely well by me (warts and all). Long before Emmerich’s excesses to come, this film captured me with its quirks, old-style filmmaking, and gadgetry. I've not done much with the later cable/tv series, but I periodically return to this tale, primarily for its cast that work for me, especially those two leads. Wonderful and worthy review, my friend. Thanks for this.le0pard13https://www.blogger.com/profile/09421175808461787862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-85941010680687060412012-04-28T08:50:17.617-04:002012-04-28T08:50:17.617-04:00Definitely one of those movies where the execution...Definitely one of those movies where the execution of an intriguing idea isn't perfect, but remains fun nonetheless, and there's nothing wrong with that. Though I wonder if we'd feel the same if Kurt Russell wasn't the lead, akin to watching a terrible C-movie ensemble (though Stargate is nowhere near that level) and finding Lance Henriksen decidedly out of place as the one actor with gravitas.Randal Graveshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08728992897551848531noreply@blogger.com
