As a rule, I find, once you've seen them there's no need to go back. But in the case of Space: 1999 there is an episode that represents an alternative show, of sorts. What if the Earth's moon had not ejected at the end of the episode and instead stayed in its place, ready to host more stories like this one? Years ago I came to the conclusion that I would have preferred that Space: 1999 be an extension of my favourite live action Anderson show, UFO -- not so much, if at all, a story about alien invaders but the tales of man's first full-blown moonbase and its inhabitants.

The bits, pieces, and details in "Breakaway' are fab. Opening shows always get the most love and attention because... well, they're the first. First impressions count for much in the competitive world of dramatic television.Barry Smighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02464450751543573690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-10408158583275115702016-09-13T12:30:44.313-04:002016-09-13T12:30:44.313-04:00John, I loved your write-up here. Very intricate details woven into the more general themes I failed to appreciate over this episode.

Space:1999 will **always** be 'my show'. I vividly recall the excitement of FINALLY having a sci-fi show, based in space, not just some Six Million Dollar Man, POTA (the series) or Allen show that spends all the effects budget on the first episode, then planet-bound. I recall the ramp-up of ads for it, the late-night episode viewing (after the news on Saturday nights), suffering through the 2nd year, and ultimately it's demise.

This was EXCITING for this 12yr old back in 1975. Again, it will always be 'my show' as much as I consider Alpha my 2nd home. Blessings.
david_bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00218727673816200051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-61694413708958443812016-09-12T22:15:00.926-04:002016-09-12T22:15:00.926-04:00Good stuff, John. I wonder if that perspective was a British thing?Tony Island Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09117609483166696808noreply@blogger.com
