I'd put it right up there with "Metamorphosis" from Star Trek". Also of note is the masterful, delicate, impressionistic score by John Williams.

I agree with the comment above, the Penny episodes tend to be among the best. Angela Cartwright was a fine young actress and both her and her character were sadly underutilized. Part of what makes "Lost in Space" so frustrating is that episodes like this prove if the writers/producers had just put some creative effort into this series it could have been something truly special.
James J. The limbo between adolescence and adulthood is portrayed well (by scrubbed up 60's television standards anyway) where wanting to be an adult is at odds with the childhood idealism of fairy tales. When given the opportunity, the writers were really able shine in these episodes. What started off a great show would soon devolve into the highly annoying antics of Dr. Smith, with Will and the Robot along for the ride. But if you are a campy Lost in Space hater like I am, you have the wonderful first season to remember, and this beautiful story in particular. Penny is for for me, a far more interesting character than the ones the writers got obsessed with, and this is her finest hour. I always wanted a reunion between an older Penny and a more evolved Mr. Nobody. Regrettably it was too sensitive and grown up idea for what it devolved into. A pity. Lost in Space could have been a truly great science fiction series had it followed this heart tugging story's lead.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03097420555737415471noreply@blogger.com
