After all the times I've seen the film, I think I subconsciously picked up on these ideas but couldn't quite put my finger on it until now.

However, I was surprised that you ended your analysis with Ripley as the one who stood above sexuality and became, in a way, invulnerable to the alien's methods of attack.

*Spoiler alert*

At the end of the film when Ripley is preparing to go into suspended animation on the Narcissus, she strips down to rather skimpy underwear and we the audience really see her as a sexual being for the first time.

It is right after this that the creature decides to reveal itself. Perhaps it would have stayed hidden had Ripley remained, in a sense, asexual?

And at the risk of pushing the symbolism too far, the name of the ship is Narcissus, the symbol of self-absorption, self-love. Ripley is stripping down to near nakedness and revealing her sexuality, but there is no audience there except herself, or at least she thought.

Thanks for the article. Interesting stuff. Looking forward to "Alien: Covenant".
sammarliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13779795069219831159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-29190671178614854712017-05-15T16:45:41.371-04:002017-05-15T16:45:41.371-04:00First and best, it will never be bettered.First and best, it will never be bettered.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03097420555737415471noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-33883107619261533642017-05-15T13:53:02.251-04:002017-05-15T13:53:02.251-04:00Perfect scifi AND horror movie. Ridley Scott's Alien(1979) is a perfect film. This is why I am pleased that he has made both Prometheus and especially Alien:Covenant(2017). I am extremely excited that Ridley Scott will make two to three more Alien films that are prequels leading up to this masterpiece Alien(1979).

SGBSGBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07137406272001346149noreply@blogger.com
