The third act just falls to pieces. Joe Dante has stated that it's his least liked films of all the ones he's done. A major reason why is the studio changed hands midway through and the new owners demanded they pick up the pace. Shortchanged on time and given even less time for post-production in order to make a summer release date it ended up being critically panned and bombed at the box office. <br /><br />I very much doubt the remake will ever happen, especially now that they have Star Wars to compete with.
