I was also pretty disappointed although I thought the production values were pretty good for the time (Eagle Transport submarine notwithstanding). I saw an interview with David Hedison who said something telling about Irwin Allen. He said that Allen was only interested in the action and couldn't care less about story and character development. As long as there were explosions and mayhem, he was happy. That's probably what happened here.
