Today, the film feels simplistic, and a little dull because nothing particularly interesting happens in terms of narrative or characterization. The film is an old-fashioned, entertaining adventure, with some supreme special effects.

It's not a crime to say that newer films and new technologies have, in many ways, eclipsed this triumph of the 1950s and 1960s.

I think that today, as you say, movie-goers must experience this film when: a) they are very young, like Joel or b) when they have nostalgic feelings for it, and have an affinity for the masterful, painstaking work of Harryhausen. This is a film where you can really appreciate the craft that went into it, but that's almost a separate consideration from the entertainment value of the thing.

Beautiful comment...

best,
JohnJohn Kenneth Muirhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15629979615332893780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-76846527822390666532012-01-07T21:01:14.680-05:002012-01-07T21:01:14.680-05:00I was smiling when I saw this one pop up.
I must ...I was smiling when I saw this one pop up.

I must tell you that an evening for Joel and John immediately sprang to mind.

I smiled, also, because a few years ago I bought the Blu-Ray on this one to watch with my son.

Unfortunately, I had missed those magical years. My son had been exposed to too many of the Star Wars prequels and some HArry Potter and some other CG garbage.

As a result, this beautiful hand-crafted work from RH was seemingly lost on him. He simply found it too slow and couldn't bear to stick it through. We never saw the whole thing that day. Too bad.

So I loved that you really explored the special effects perspective and AGE plays a great deal into it.

Mind you, like you, I love them and I fully appreciate the artistry of the craft and I loved your "scorned" comment. So true. The fact is we love models and stop motion and all that other classic stuff.

Unfortunately my son was a few years older than Joel and he just couldn't appreciate it in the same way I did.

As you said John, it's unfar to compare and we simply can't. It's like apples and oranges. It's helpful to catch these kids at the right age so they can appreciate the beauty of it and experience its magic.

You mentioned Land Of The Lost and I happened to introduce my son and daughter to those episodes at the right time in their lives. So they liked them a lot back in the day.

Anyway, as you mentioned, seeing it a few years ago I liked it too, but it wasn't magical like it was when I was young and thus I could appreciate it for what it was too.

In fact, and I hope you cover it, I even loved the much malighned Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger. I saw it in theatres when I was young and the cyclops creature was so sympathetic. Again, it was RH who really injected so much emotion into that creature. I weeped as he battled fiercely against the tiger and was brought to his knees.

Anyway, these films are special and as you so rightly point out, Jason And The Argonauts is even more impressive. That one holds up perhaps the best even today on a storytelling level. Because, let's face it, the animation by RH is incredible in everything he touched.

Will you be covering EYE? I hope so. If not, please share your thoughts.

Most importantly, I'm glad Joel had a chance to experience it at the right time in his life. That's cool!

Best,
sffSFFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04256589316922398158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-79278444800745435402012-01-07T11:44:28.547-05:002012-01-07T11:44:28.547-05:00Hi Jane:

I thought John Philip Law (in addition to being attractive), made for a very good, very serious Sinbad. I enjoyed his performance, as well as Tom Baker's (in Golden).

Best wishes,
JohnJohn Kenneth Muirhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15629979615332893780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-21879472097458918292012-01-07T11:22:01.346-05:002012-01-07T11:22:01.346-05:00I love these films too. Serious crush on John Phillip Law after that.Jane Considinenoreply@blogger.com
