I've recently rediscovered/become obsessed with this film and had forgotten just how great it was. Plus, he's disappeared-to where, no one knows (according to the film's viral marketing campaign.)Lionel Braithwaitehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03024473793409118944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-86546745227536381902009-12-05T07:20:17.528-05:002009-12-05T07:20:17.528-05:00LeOpard13:

I enjoyed writing it, and seeing Tron again.

It is eerie how closely Tron mirrors the real-life events unfolding at Disney, isn't it? Walt Dumont = Walt Disney is pretty amazing.

And 1982 was indeed a great year at the movies, for all those films you listed in your comment too. I'm actually a big fan of Shrader's Cat People and I saw Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid in the theater!!!

all my best,
JKMJohn Kenneth Muirhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15629979615332893780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-538466602446324712009-12-04T23:56:24.493-05:002009-12-04T23:56:24.493-05:00An absolutely great post, JKM. When I took this in at the theater, the FX were cutting edge. By the 90's, they were quaint. But after reading this, the film, like the grid (and that magnificent final shot of the film), is more detailed than I ever expected.

And thanks, too, for bringing up how great 1982 was for film. From the trailer I saw, it has a "Heart of Darkness" vibe to it; and I wonder if Flynn -- formerly our hero -- has turned villainous; a metaphor, perhaps, for the yuppie generation selling out.

Should be interesting...and visually dynamic!

Thanks for commenting!

JKMJohn Kenneth Muirhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15629979615332893780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12380553.post-80281291727996917382009-12-04T14:33:19.382-05:002009-12-04T14:33:19.382-05:00Once again you provide fascinating insight into a ...Once again you provide fascinating insight into a genre classic. I hadn't thought of the parallel between ENCOM in the film and Disney Corp. in real-life but the examples you cite are eerily right on the money and demonstrate the additional layers to this film. Sure, you can enjoy it on a purely, popcorn, entertainment level but there is something else going on that you so eloquently point out.

For me, I have fond memories of going to see this when it first came out and being absolutely dazzled by the visuals. Over the years, I always look back at the film with fondness and nostalgic memories... just not of seeing the film but also of that time, when personal computing was taking off (had my C64!) and video game arcades were all the rage. I can remember playing both DEADLY DISCS OF TRON and TRON arcades... loved both games.

What are your feelings on the upcoming sequel? It looks like they've got both Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner on board with Steve Lisberger as consultant.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.com
