There's a real Guns of Navarone kind of feel to it with the grand commando mission and the resistance fighters who so nobly give their lives for the cause. I also agree with you about the CGI Tarkin. When I saw Bryan Cranston as LBJ in All The Way, I was so impressed by the makeup work done. I also suspect that there was some CGI touch up done for the close-ups. I think a similar approach could have been done with Tarkin. Get an actor who is similar to Peter Cushing, do a really good make-up job, and touch it up in CGI during close-ups.
